Profile
I am Professor of Information and Communication Design, teaching and researching in the areas of information design, communication design and typography.
Alongside my teaching and research, I have held a range of student education leadership roles, including Pro-Dean for Student Education for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, Director of Student Education in the School of Design, and Programme Leader for BA Graphic and Communication Design. Alongside my design specific interests, I retain a wider interest in student education including quality assurance and assessment design, student experience, and the organisation and operationalisation of educational enhancement at scale.
Prior to joining the University of Leeds, I held permanent lectureships at Brunel University London (Brunel Design School) and the University of Reading (Department of Typography & Graphic Communication).
Research interests
- Information and UX design. With specific focus on the areas of: data visualisation, design for decision making (especially in relation to understanding and responding to risk and uncertainty), design for the environment, and design for health. All of these research areas combine the need to communicate information in a way that is useful and meaningful to end users.
- Multimodal linguistics and visible language. This interest stems from my PhD research, examining how meaning is made in communications, especially how the visual and design elements of ‘documents’ contribute to or change meaning across multiple modes and platforms.

Student education
I teach and supervise a variety of subjects within graphic and communication design at all levels. Within this I specialise in topics relating to information design and user experience design, typography, and how communication design makes meaning for people.
I also have a long-standing interest in student education and curriculum development leadership, based on my experience in programme, school, and faculty education leadership. My educational interests include quality assurance and assessment design, student experience, and organisation and operationalisation of educational enhancement at scale.
