Vien Cheung, a Chartered Colourist, has published 130 refereed publications in the areas of colour, imaging and textiles. Her ethos on integrity and diversity takes her to explore how colour and imaging technology can shift our black and white judgements into a more variegated and expansive perception of the world. [See Vien’s reflective essay Colour: its influence and impact to the way we live, contributes to the University of Leeds’ World changers: celebrating impactful research essay collection.]
Vien received the Selwyn Award from The Royal Photographic Society (RPS, UK) in 2008 for her research in colour imaging and imaging technology, and a Silver Medal from the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC, UK) in 2011 in recognition of her contributions to education, the Society and in the interests of the allied industries. She was also the recipient of the 2016 Service Award from the Society for Imaging, Science and Technology (IS&T, USA) for her contributions in organising IS&T colour conferences for over a dozen years. In 2021, she has been approved for Fellowship of the SDC – the only professional qualification for colourists worldwide. More recently, Vien was awarded a Gold Medal (2023) from the SDC and an Outstanding Alumni Award (2024) from the School of Fashion and Textiles at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, for her prolonged contributions and remarkable achievements in colour research, education and publications.
