The School of Media and Communication has joined forces with University of Glasgow to host a pioneering online conference exploring media production in the Global South.
Organised by Dr Anna Zoellner and Professor Chris Paterson of the University of Leeds, and Dr Hayes Mabweazara of the University of Glasgow, ‘Researching Media Production,’ held on 30 May, was the first to explore the particularities involved in researching media production in non-Western sites of production.
The conference sought to advance the study of media production, both theoretically and methodologically, by exploring the validity and adaptability of Western concepts, and by developing alternative approaches. 22 presentations from 12 countries explored the specificities of cultural, political, and industrial contexts of media production in the Global South across different media, genres, professional and organisational contexts.
The conference was part of the work undertaken by the Media Industries and Cultural Production Research Group and the Global Communication Research Group at the University of Leeds; the International Association for Media and Communication Research Media Production Analysis Working Group; and the Glasgow University Media Group.
Dr Zoellner and Professor Patersonplan to produce an edited book from the conference.
