Race and Media Conference this week! (22-23 April 2026)

The School of Media and Communication is delighted to host the international Race and Media conference this week, taking place in the Maurice Keyworth Building.

The Race and Media Conference takes place on 22-23 April 2026 and welcomes delegates from across the world – with around half of the conference participants based outside the UK; with affiliations in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

The conference aims to bring a global perspective to the study of race and media, tracing the resonances of racist, divisive and far-right discourses across ‘liberal’ and illiberal, ‘democratic’ and authoritarian media landscapes and political contexts.

Keynote addresses include Paula Chakravartty (NYU) on ‘Media as Violence and the Wretched of the Earth’, and Herman Gray (UC Santa Cruz) on 'From Watching Race to Making Race: Notes on the Journey of an Idea’, alongside roundtable discussions and panel sessions.

Registration is now closed, but we look forward to welcoming delegates to the University of Leeds.

The conference is hosted by the University of Leeds’ School of Media and Communication and co-sponsored by European Journal of Cultural Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Identities, Media, Culture and Society and the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication.

The conference committee is Maitrayee Basu, Israel Campos, Helen Kim, Cindy Ma, Dibyadyuti Roy, Anamik Saha and Sara Tafakori.
