Profile

I joined the University of Leeds in 2023 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. I am currently working with Professor Catherine Johnson on the EU CHANSE-funded project Public Service Media in the Age of Platforms (PSM-AP). The project comparatively analyses how public service media organisations, across Europe and North America, are responding to the impact of global streaming services and platformisation. By examining media policy, organisational practices, and texts and interfaces, the PSM-AP project explores how platform power is affecting public service values.

Prior to joining the project, I obtained a PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of Warwick with a thesis entitled The Representation of the Northern Male Body in British Film and Television. The thesis examined how contemporary discourses of Northern working-class identity are mediated through the representation of male bodies and embodiments in screen fiction. I also hold an MA and BA (Hons) in Film and Television, also from the University of Warwick.

Research interests

My research covers the representations of social class, regional identity, gender, race, and bodies and embodiments in film and television. I have published work which considers these topics via both textual analysis and as intersecting with structures of policymaking, technology, and political economies in the British film and television industries. As part of the PSM-AP project I am contributing to research about the influence of platform power in shaping the functioning of public service media and their mediation of social and cultural values.
