Sharon Hooper

Profile

I am currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at the University of Leeds entitled Community and Collaboration as Feminist Activism in the work of Leeds Animation Workshop. My supervisors are Professor Melanie Bell and Professor Yvonne Tasker.

Since 2005 I have worked as a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Arts University on BA (hons.) Filmmaking and BA (hons.) Visual Communication, as well as on MA Creative Practice.

I completed an MA in Feminism and Visual Arts: History, Theory, Practice with Professor
Griselda Pollock at the University of Leeds in 2000.

I then trained in film production with Vera Media before working freelance and in television. My main work has been in
independent film with third sector organisations.

Research interests

My research interests are feminist filmmaking and feminist film history, socially engaged creative practice and art as activism.
My practice focuses on filmmaking with third sector organisations and grassroots groups, taking a feminist and inclusive approach. I also use filmmaking as a research tool and I often work either collaboratively or as part of participatory production.
