Leeds ranks among UK’s top ten for Communication and Media in Complete University Guide

Founded in 1968 as the Centre for Television Research, the School of Media and Communication has built a global profile
The University of Leeds has placed 8th in the UK for Communication & Media Studies in the latest Complete University Guide – a strong result that highlights the reputation and breadth of the School of Media and Communication.
The Complete University Guide’s subject rankings are based on a broad range of key indicators from graduate prospects and student satisfaction to research quality.
“This ranking is a real credit to our academic community,” said Professor Joanne Garde-Hansen, Head of School. “It reflects our commitment to critical thinking, creative practice, and research informed education, and builds on our global reputation, with our subject area ranked joint 33rd in the QS World Rankings by Subject.”
Founded in 1968 as the Centre for Television Research – making it one of the oldest and largest departments of its kind in Europe – the School of Media and Communication has built a global profile for its teaching and research across media and communication, from journalism and popular culture to digital media, political communication, and the screen industries.
Recently, the School announced a major new doctoral research initiative in the creative industries: the University of Leeds and the University of Warwick have together secured one of just ten prestigious Doctoral Focal Awards from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
Running from 2026 to 2033, the Creative Bridges partnership will fund 20 PhD scholarships focused on sustainability and diversity in the screen industries. At Leeds, it will be led by Professor Garde-Hansen with Professor Anamik Saha, Professor of Race and Media. The collaboration will train a new generation of interdisciplinary researcher-practitioners to work alongside and within the film, television, games and immersive media sectors.
The University of Leeds placed 21st overall in this year’s Complete University Guide.
