Leeds graduate wins top prize at prestigious RTS Student Television Awards

A Leeds graduate is celebrating following her triumph at the Royal Television Society (RTS) Student Television Awards.
Shanai Dunglinson took home the top prize in the Undergraduate Journalism category for her TV Documentary ‘Hairdressing's Forgotten Clients’.
The film, which focuses on the neglect of black and brown women in the haircare industry, was praised by the jury for its creative execution and powerful storytelling.
In their citation, the RTS jury described Shanai’s work as ‘compelling’, adding:
“The jury loved the clever framing of shots and creative use of graphics to delve deep into this under-reported issue. The reporter’s own personal connection and knowledge elevated this piece to make it a compelling watch.”
Also nominated in the same category (and winner of the regional RTS Yorkshire Student Awards) was Christian Morante and his TV documentary about grassroots rugby.
The awards recognise the best audiovisual work created by students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The winners were crowned at a prestigious London awards ceremony at the IET, Savoy Place, hosted by rapper, author and broadcaster Guvna B.
Layla Painter, Lecturer in Journalism Practice, Programme Lead BA Journalism said: “We're so proud of Shanai and Christian's success in these awards. To have two of our University of Leeds BA Journalism students recognised for their talent and abilities at such a high level is a fantastic reflection on the quality of work our students achieve.”
