Mollie Brown
- Course: MA Writing for Performance and Digital Media
- Year of graduation: 2022
What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?
I have recently completed my undergraduate degree in Theatre and Performance at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. On the course, I found that I really enjoyed writing for stage and I wanted to continue my studies further. I loved my time at Leeds, so I felt like this course was the perfect fit for me.
What aspects of your course do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the freedom of being able to write whatever interests me with support from the tutors who are all industry professionals. They are enthusiastic about all ideas and I feel comfortable expressing what I am interested in.
What would you say about the learning facilities in your School and at the University in general?
I have access to so many texts online and in the library. The campus at Leeds has great accessible study spaces for me to work in. The school also provides fantastic studio spaces which we can book independently if needed, and we also make use of these spaces in seminars to workshop ideas.
What other activities are available for students to take part in outside of their studies (e.g. societies), and which ones have you tried out yourself?
There are so many! I have been involved in a couple of different theatre societies which have all been so much fun. The main society for me though is LUU A cappella; something I never thought I would ever be involved in before coming to university! There’s genuinely something for everyone.
Have you been involved with a performance project, lecture or seminar you particularly enjoyed and what did you take from the session?
In a seminar for one of the compulsory modules about writing for contemporary theatre, we worked as a group to formulate dialogue based on stimuli that were presented to us. This chance to write freely and then share our work with others really boosted my confidence in terms of my own work and helped me feel more comfortable with receiving feedback from peers, which is what creative practice is all about. It might be scary, but it’s definitely worth it!
What do you plan to do now you’ve finished your course, and how do you think the skills and knowledge you’ve developed at Leeds will help with these plans?
In the future, I am hoping to use the creative writing skills I have gained to continue making my own work. I feel like I’ve generated an understanding of the kind of industry I am hoping to enter through this course and I now have the skills needed to do so.
