Residence Abroad Network

Residence Abroad

Who we are

Following the successful Year Abroad Conferences in Newcastle and Leeds, this website is for network members involved in residence abroad research and practice to share information, projects, concerns and calls for action in between conferences.

Our mission

Post Brexit, the benefits for students going on any Residence Abroad (RA) is more valuable than ever for boosting communication and intercultural skills, developing resilience and employability in a globalising world, particularly for language degree students. Yet ensuring RA success creates challenges for students and staff, not least in the current climate of uncertainty over the future of modern language degrees, cost of living and global slowdown.

This network brings together all those involved in RA, including academics, professionals, policy makers and students, as a community of practice for sharing expertise and experience in all aspects of RA.

We hold regular online webinars, and arrange in-person conferences every two years.

Past events

The second Year Abroad Conference, hosted at Leeds University on 13th September 2019, provided a platform for academic and professional staff involved in YA to come together to share their expertise, experience and practice in all aspects of the YA. Invited speakers included Prof Ros Mitchell (University of Southampton), and the day’s talks and workshops covered many practical and research-focused activities designed to share best practices around residence abroad, and to boost students’ positive experiences of YA.
