Gender, Race, Peace - Reading Group Launch Event

Join us for the first meeting of this new interdisciplinary reading group.

Conveners: Ingrid Sharp (School of Languages, Cultures and Societies) and Susan Grayzel (Fulbright Professor, LAHRI)

Research context

Scholarship on the peace movement (largely defined here as political thought and action ranging from pacifism to anti-militarism including campaigns against specific weapons as well as in opposition to specific wars) has been transformed in the last forty years by seeing women and gender as central to its theory and practice.

The role of race and in particular the absence of the activism of racial minorities and especially of women of colour from the study of peace as well as war has been much less well studied.

Aims of the reading group

This reading group aims to explore interconnections between feminist activism for peace/disarmament and against the deployment of violence by state and non-state actors and the role that both racism and anti-racist practices have played in the broad struggle to resist and supplant violent state action.

Our initial meeting will include the opportunity to engage with a short text that will be shared with all registered attendees.  We hope in subsequent meetings to start by considering the new book, Peace on Our Terms: The Global Battle for Women’s Rights after the First World War by Mona Siegel.

We welcome suggestions and ideas from all.
