disobedient theatre to bring about change

A workshop aimed at grassroots change-makers from all walks of life, who want to use creative and disobedient theatre to bring about change.

This is the final event in the 2018-19 Sadler seminar series.

We invite Leeds-based activists from a range of backgrounds to come and share in a day’s training event in October. The aims emerge from our existing work on climate change, social justice, social movements and prison abolition.

In this training, we are bringing a year of learning about activist tactics to a close with this practical, skills-based workshop that furthers the dialogue in a grounded conversation with people learning, doing, and campaigning. With a short sharing what we have learned from a collaboration with activist educators in South Africa, this is capacity building for Leeds based activists and those interested in arts and social change.

This training is aimed at grassroots change-makers from all walks of life, who want to use creative and disobedient theatre to bring about change. The workshop will equip you to:

• Take artistic, daring, imaginative actions to help your campaigns and projects broaden their audience, gain media attention and have bigger impact. 

• Use practical, movement-based exercises with your groups to generate creative ideas and actions.

• Use a ‘Sites of Intervention’ analysis to determine the most strategic sites for creative resistance.

• Respond to opposition and work through conflict in your groups using theatre techniques. 

This workshop fuses Theatre of the Oppressed, and ‘Beautiful Trouble’ practice with techniques used by South African activist educators at Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education, to create an interactive deep-dive into strategic, creative, cultural resistance. It is experiential, and comprised of a variety of movement-based group exerci​ses (please wear comfortable clothing!)
