Leeds Animation Workshop Background:
Leeds Animation Workshop is a not-for-profit, radical, collective arts organisation, run by women, which produces and distributes animated films and films on social and educational issues.
The organisation began in 1976 as a group of women friends who came together to make a film about the need for pre-school childcare.
Throughout its forty-year history the Workshop has been run by women, who have carried out all stages of the production process, from initial research to final distribution.
The Leeds Animation Workshop has offered their complete archive to the University of Leeds for the purposes of research, education and engagement. This archive includes:
- Films/Film-related Artwork/Pre-Production and Production Documentation (inc. animation cels, rough sketches, layout notes etc);
- Institutional Documentation (relating to business activities, financial records etc);
- Post-Production Documentation (marketing, inc. postcards and leaflets, records relating to distribution and funding etc).
Aims of this Speculative Lunch:
This lunch aims to bring together colleagues with an interest in this material or a curiosity about women’s cultural production in the UK and/or independent filmmaking.
The short-to-medium term aim of the working lunch is to gauge interest in acquiring the archive (and its subsequent cataloguing) and explore capacity-building activities around the collection, particularly relating to research and teaching, and from a cross and inter-disciplinary perspective.
