Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I previously did my Bachelors at Leeds in History of Art and returned after graduating in 2022 to complete my masters.
What made you want to apply to your Masters course and to Leeds?
Having already studied at the University for 3 years and falling in love with Leeds, I knew returning as an alumni was the right decision for me. I knew the School of Design to be good and after reading about the span and scope of the course and all it covers; I thought it would be the most suited to me as I wanted to study multiple aspects of the fashion industry.
What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?
I have always loved fashion from an early age. I love how personal it can be to people, and a mode of expression for many. It's another way people can be creative in their identity and self-expression. There is also so much more to fashion than just clothes, which not a lot of people consider.
What aspects of the course are you enjoying the most?
I most enjoyed the practical elements of the course, such as getting the chance to create my own garments both virtually and physically. We got the chance to use software such as InDesign and Photoshop and spent time in the fashion studio making projects to be photographed after. It was incredibly fun and engaging.
What would you say about the learning facilities in your School and at the University in general?
There is something for everyone within the School of Design. There are extremely useful facilities for design and textiles, as well as art and fashion. I felt incredible lucky to have access to these.
Did you work closely with a particular tutor or member or the University’s academic staff? Tell us about that experience.
Caroline was extremely instrumental in my time spent on the course. From my enrolment, she has been incredibly supportive and helpful in many ways, and always showed a belief in me and my abilities. She makes a personal effort to get to know all students and their work, which really makes a difference in how supported and recognised you feel whilst studying.
What do you plan to do when you’ve finished your course, and how do you think the skills and knowledge you’ve developed/are developing at Leeds will help with these plans?
I would love to pursue a career in creative marketing for fashion brands. I want to be a part of the team that organises shoots and online content to advertise upcoming collections, which I think completing my masters helped me to realise.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
If you are unsure about what specific area of fashion you want to venture in to, this course is perfect for you as you get experience learning about multiple sectors within the industry. It can help you decide what you are most passionate about!
