School of Media & Communication celebrates ranking 34th best place to study in the world
The University of Leeds’ School of Media & Communication is in the top 100 places in the world for studying and research these subjects, according to the globally-respected 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The annual QS rankings draw on five key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and impact of an academic or department at a university), and international research network.
According to these criteria, the University of Leeds is the 34th best institution for study and research in Communications and Media studies.
The School of Media and Communication continues to produce internationally excellent and world-leading results across journalism, media, communication, film, television, photography, social media, digital media and much more. We excel at innovative approaches to methods, creative practice and societal impact as well as scholarly books and leading journal contributions. Our research benefits communities, provides data for policymakers, seeks to make a difference in the world, and informs our teaching and the student experience.
The QS rankings show that the University of Leeds is the 51st best institution for the arts and humanities in the world, and the 8th best in the UK.
The University has also been ranked:
- 36th for English Literature and Language
- 44th for Philosophy
- 55th for Modern Languages
- 90th for Linguistics
- In the top 100 for History; Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies; and the Performing Arts (which includes the School of Music and the School of Performance and Cultural Industries)
- In the top 150 for Art and Design.
Together, these rankings constitute a huge success for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Cultures, where teaching and research in the above subjects takes place.

The University of Leeds is currently ranked the 75th best university in the world, the University’s highest ever position in the QS rankings’ 20-year history. A key strength identified was the International Research Network, for which indicator the university was ranked 16th in the world.
