Profile
Since joining the University of Leeds in May 2020 as a Lecturer in EAP, I have taught on several EGAP and ESAP courses. Prior to this, I worked as a Lecturer in EAP at the University of Malawi where I, among other things, coordinated EAP teaching. I obtained my PhD in Academic literacies from the School of Education at the University of Leeds in 2018. My doctoral project examined identity uptake by students making the transition to university education in Malawi.
Research interests
My main research interests are around social semiotic practices, particularly how academic literacy practices affect identity uptake by both students and tutors on university campuses. I am also interested in the ‘performative’ potential that student voices have in ‘indexing’ the wider academic space.
To further these interests, I am currently working on two projects exploring the intercultural encounters of EAL early career researchers in UK HE and the performance of multilingual identities by a British-Saudi PGR.
