This paper will report on an innovative ongoing AHRC-funded project to produce the first academic monograph on the ethics of farmed animal welfare in a Christian context and engage churches and other Christian institutions with its policy implications. It will outline the aims and methods of the project and provide an update on progress to date. It will present interim findings from the project concerning how issues of farmed animal welfare should be framed in relation to Christian theology and ethics, and what might be distinctive about this framing in relation to other approaches to animal ethics. It will also reflect on the project as a worked example of how academics in theology and religious studies may work with an activist agenda at the interface between academia and other institutions.
