Dr Mahyar Shariatpanahi

I am Dr Mahyar Shariatpanahi, an assistant professor in History and the civilization of the Islamic nations. I joined the University of Leeds as a visiting research fellow in January 2020.

I am working in the area of medieval Islamic botany and pharmacology and have published several peer-reviewed articles and entries. My linguistic skills in Persian and Arabic enable me to research this area. I am currently working on the History of botanical knowledge in Iran (pre-modern-current day).

For 10 years, I have selected two interdisciplinary research strands: the natural history in Iran and the surgical history of the Islamic era. In the PhD level, I have selected the natural history as an interdisciplinary research strand. In the next step, I proposed a research plan for my dissertation with this title: "The history of botanical knowledge in Iran (the Lands of The Eastern Caliphate) (From the Third to Seventh A.H/Nine-Thirteen A.D. I completed my doctoral dissertation at the University of Tehran on July 17, 2013.  Further, I adequately analyzed these manuscripts in my dissertation:

Besides, I have also published 26 entries in the Encyclopedia of Medicine of Islam and Iran in other branches of medical history, such as medical education, classification, biography, and bibliography. Indeed, my first obtaining research experience in the history of science was in collaborating with this Encyclopedia. This cooperation has continued since 2008 until now.  In the first volume, for example, I have examined six of the noteworthy medical books in ancient Greece, four Galenius treatises:

1. De partium homoeomerium differentia[1], 2. Therapeutics to Glaucon[2], 3. On Containing Causes[3], 4. The Faculties of the Soul Follow the Mixtures of the Body.[4] In the same volume, I surveyed the Kitāb Buqrāṭ fiʼl-akhlāt (Hippocrates: On humours)[5], which attributed to Hippocrates. In the second volume, I also studied another book on Hippocrates: Kitāb buqrāṭ fī ḥabl ʼalā ḥabl: (On superfoetation)[6]. These days I am scrutinizing 10 new entries for volume IV.

I am also an expert in editing medical Persian and Arabic manuscripts. In the same encyclopedia, I reviewed this manuscript: Jāmiʿ fī al-Adwiya al-Mufrada, by Ibn samajun. Additionally, I investigated the only manuscript of Ghāfiqī’s Jāmiʿ which Preserve in the Malik National library in Iran. I published my research findings in a peer-reviewed article.[7] Now, I am exploring in 12 new entries for volume 4 this encyclopedia, in Surgical Instruments, Biographies, and Bibliography areas. Also, I published an article about Medical Education in Ancient Greece and Islam in which I argued the association between the methods of medical education in the Islamic period with ancient Greece.[8]

Besides, I have been surveying the surgical principles and techniques in the Islamic era from Andalusia to India (7-20 A.D). Generally, this science consisted of three fundamental techniques which were Cauterize, splitting, and cutting. At the first step, I scrutinized these specialized branches: Oral and maxillary surgery, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Hepatology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Physical therapy, Pathology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Pediatrics, Orthopedic Surgery, Public Health, Military Medicine, Angiology, Cardiology, and General Surgery. Finding results demonstrated that some of the essential principles and techniques were considered by surgeons in the Islamic world. Foremost principles were the differential diagnosis, precautionary measures, and prevention methods of bleeding, distinguished procedures of stitching, disinfecting and utilizing ointment. Furthermore, Surgeons should be comprehensively acquainted with a wide variety of surgical instruments, such as hooks, knives, drills, tweezers, rods, scissors, and Plier. I would like to mention that I have published over 20 original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals for these topics (in Persian).

Additionally, I examined this subject for my M.A Thesis: "The position of the Bektashi Order (Sufi sect) in Anatolia until the end of the Ottoman Empire. I have argued that Bektashi was the cause of the separation between the Shiites in Anatoli. From a cultural perspective, they had a vital role in the social-orientation toward Turkish culture. In fact, before the Ottoman dynasty, Iranian culture and Persian language were dominant in this region. Therefore, the cultural connection to Anatolian Shi'a communities was loosened from Iran. From a political viewpoint, they prevented Shiite uprisings in the area and reduced the influence of the Safavid dynasty. The Bektashi adopted some Christian religious principles and practices to increase their influence in the Balkan Christians. The most significant factor in their continuing influence was the relationship with the Janissaries military institution. For this reason, they opposed any military reform. As a result, this resistance caused their final repression in the 19th century. However, they continued to operate secretly and never found the former influence. Finally, I also explored the current situation in Turkey and Albania.

Additionally, I have been conducting a research project on the sociology and cultural history of Iran based on the miniatures. For the past 5 years. I have been a supervisor in several Master theses in these subjects:

A.    Miniatures are significant sources of Iranian culture and social history. Over the past four years, one of my research projects has been to extract cultural and social information from images. I have reviewed the miniatures of various painting schools in Iran jointly collaborating with postgraduate and doctoral students. One of the important elements in Iranian culture is clothes that have undergone many developments over time. The study of these developments displays essential information about Iran's culture and social history. Typically, inadequate information is available in historical texts about the social and cultural role of women in Iran, while an image contains many elements of the women's cultural history in Iran. Therefore, in one thesis, the women's clothes were examined based on the miniatures of the Herat School. In this research, various characteristics of women's clothes have been investigated, including decorations and motifs. Features of these Miniatures indicate Realism and emphasis on detail and extraordinary delicacy, brilliant colours. The research findings demonstrate that women's social class can be distinguished according to the type of their clothes: aristocrats, the general public. The women of the wealthy class, the princesses, and the king's wives used the excellent dresses which were decorated with a variety of plant and animal designs. It was also applied to pearls, fur, and gold on the shirt's margin, collar, and sleeves.

B.    Moreover, In the Timurid dynasty, Metalworking and especially the steelmaking industry had peaked in Iran. Historians have highlighted this era as the summit of industrial and military weapons in Iran. Painting is one of the most reliable historical sources for surveying on a variety of arts and crafts in the Timurid Age. Hence, Miniatures provide valuable information about the features, application and decorating of war weapons in this period. In an overview, the aggressive and defensive weapons of the Timurid armies included: Sword, bow and arrow, spear, mace, shield, dagger, helmet, and Lasso. Besides, there were also other tools and equipment, such as catapults, slings, and ladders. One soldier equipment includes: Each rider has two or three arrows, three quivers, filled with arrows, a battle-axe, Sharp sword, helmet, two shields. Based on the pictures, the broad and curved swords had become to the flat and narrow swords. The shields were circular which were decorated with Arabesque motifs and golden and black studs. Armour with interconnected chains that stretched out to the knees of the soldiers. Also armoured with rectangular metal plates with beautiful decorations. Steel helmets were made in two ways: Simple that only covers the bowl or with woven chains that stretched on the shoulder.

C.     Another research project, the Prophet's life is scrutinized based on the Iranian miniatures, from Tabriz my school until Isfahan school. This research has examined historically and artistically and technically the images related to the Prophet's life based on historical illustrated manuscripts. No one and nothing as much as the Prophet of Islam has influenced the art and literature of the Islamic era. This impression is visible in several fields, including painting. The Prophet portrait always considers the significant themes of Islamic art. The evolution of Islamic painting began from the Mongol period, and its effects appeared in the Timurid period. In these two periods, due to the orientation of the Ilkhanid and Timurid rulers towards Islam, its impact had also observed in the art of painting.  During this period, painters used their art to illustrate the portray of the Prophet Muhammad in religious and historical books. Muslim artists committed to Islam more than ever showed their Prophet and his family in his works of art. Among the topics of the Prophet's life which were considered by the artists, can mention the following: The birth, adolescence, and youth of the Prophet, Muhammad's first revelation, wars, religious propaganda, migration, Isra and Mi'raj, the event of Ghadir Khumm, demise and so on.

D.    Furthermore, was the investigation of the symbolic use of colours in the Safavid art Colors has a symbolic meaning in Iranian civilizations. The Widespread use of polychrome-tiles in Safavid mosques is one of the distinctive features of this era. Major colours utilized in the mosaic tile include turquoise, blue and yellow, which have created an eye-catching controversy with marble and courtyard pavement rocks. For instance, the Azure is the colour of the universe that exhibits the breadth and depth of the sky. In a tile, it covers the space like the sky and the yellow and orange colours in the middle it shines like stars.  Besides, Red, brown and yellow, purple, blue, green and white were the most colours utilized in Safavid painting. Painters applied golden colour for collar and shawl, decorations, dishes. They used a silver colour to show the water. In the study of colour psychology, the first choice of any colour represents the norms and abnormalities of the painter's mind. Research findings demonstrate that the first painters' choice was the brown that indicates an uncomfortable feeling. The second colour, black, means Painters were denying themselves. But the next colour, blue, indicates they want to overcome emotional issues.

E.    Finally, the Astan Quds Razavi Carpet Museum in Mashhad has the most unique and original carpets in Iran.  Nowadays, in this unique treasury, 100 carpets are displayed to enthusiasts which are artistic masterpieces. Hence, other research has been focused on the diverse designs of these carpets. Presenting exquisite designs is one of the inherent characteristics of Iranian artists. After analyzing available samples of Astan Quds Razavi Museum, these patterns were classified, in which the most frequent is the Prayer-niche design.

F.     In the next research program, I supervised this subject, "Landscape in Iranian painting". Persian Garden is one of the oldest and most significant gardens in the world, spoken in the Greek writings and the Torah. Agriculture and gardening are recommended in the ancient Iranian religion, Zoroastrian, with a special status. The pattern of Iranian gardens has been in harmony with nature and the amount of water since ancient times. For this reason, gardens have long been built in many ways. Iranian artists, based on their beliefs, considered nature as manifestations of God's glory and beauty, and have tried to represent it in their artworks. The Iranian painter, with the help of imagination, tries to achieve the spirit of the objects. Landscape paintings have semantic, formal and technical characteristics that are separate from other cultures and the naturalistic painting of the West. The tranquillity of the Iranian garden is one of the features that distinguishes it from many gardens of other communities and nations. Maybe the primary cause for this differentiation can be summed up in the simplicity of the gardens in establishing the direct human link with pure nature and, therefore, with the Lord of Nature.

G.    The next project was: "history of Islamic education based on images". One of the most valuable documents for recognizing the issue of education is the existing drawings. The purpose study was to investigate the most important centres, practices, and sources, such as Training in mosques, homeschool, library, clinical education, teaching at the Monastery.

H.    In the area of calligraphy, I have collaborated on two major research projects. In a paper, various styles of Nastaʿlīq calligraphic script have been investigated in the Qajar era. In another dissertation, I was the supervisor of this topic: Stylistics of the Thuluth script in the inscriptions of the Khorasan Mosque in the Timurid Empire.

I.   Now, I am starting a project by collaborating with a PhD Student about the Comparative study of women in the Indian and Ottoman Empire based on the Gūrkāniyān and Turkish schools. In the first step, we investigated the motifs and texture of the Gurkani and Ottoman-era based on miniatures from 9 centuries to 11 centuries A.H. The art of weaving is one of the most important arts, which have widespread use in society and at the same time expressing the work of the artists. This art is the most valuable and oldest industries, among Muslim countries, especially India, Iran and ottoman. The nineteenth to eleventh A.H has been very important in terms of the role, colour, texture, and composition of fabrics, in particular, these two civilizations (India and ottoman) have been influenced by the various artists of the Safavid era in the past of centuries and have been affected. In this research, we study the roles and designs used and woven in Gurkani and Ottoman era, fabrics, as well as a variety of designs and texture and the type of colour and composition used in the fabric and the impact and, have been affected. These civilizations are on each other with the attention of the Safavid era and have been adapted reviewed. The focus of research is the similarities and differences in woven designs and patterns in Gurkani and ottoman fabrics. So first the texture of the fabric during the Gurkani and Ottoman times, then the categorization of designs woven motifs are divided into three groups of the plant, animals, and humans and the design of the lines. Fabrics of each period, a descriptive-analytic method and information, gathering method have been used for a library. The studies show that weaving fabrics influenced the Gurkani and Ottoman periods during the Safavid era and subscriptions and differences are observed in these two states. The use of plants, animals and human designs is the common denominator in these two civilizations.
