Dr Richard Rowland
I joined the University of Leeds in 2020. I obtained my PhD from the University of Reading in 2014. Before coming to Leeds I held temporary positions at Oxford and Warwick, and permanent positions at La Trobe University and the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy at ACU.
My research is primarily in metaethics and normativity. Much of my current research focuses on how we should understand the normativity of domains that have not been the traditional purview of metaethics and normativity, such as the normativity of gender norms and gendered thought and talk as well as the normatiity of aesthetic standards and emotions’ standards.
My previous research has been focussed on three intersecting topics. First, I have done a lot of work on the nature of value, reasons, reasons for pro-attitudes (e.g desire and admiration) and the relationship between reasons and value – some of this research culminated in my book, the Normative and the Evaluative: The Buck-Passing Account of Value (OUP, 2019). Second, I have also done a lot of work on the moral error theory and its implications for epistemic normativity. Third, I have done a lot of work moral disagreement; my guidebook on Moral Disagreement is forthcoming with Routledge. I continue to research in these areas.
I am interested in supervising projects in any area of metaethics or normativity as well as on normative ethics.
Research projects

Any research projects I'm currently working on will be listed below.
