Matthew Palfreyman

My musical background is in performance. Having studied two degress at the Royal Northen College of Music, performing in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Opera of the Year Award Manchester Evening News) La Vie Parisienne, and Theodora. I have also been performing as a tenor soloist across the North West most recently with the Hallé. My other performance work has been as an Operatic Director. I directed Leeds University Opera Societies production of Orpheus in the Underworld in 2018 and Donna and her Mobile with Sheffied City Opera the same year. My most recent project has been a community project with Sheffield City Opera titled Women of Steel for Classical Sheffield 2019. I am also currently writing the libretto for an opera based on Chelsea Manning’s time in Iraq.

I’ve persued a doctorate because I saw the lack of disucssion around the peformance of masculinity in opera and felt that I have the ability to help start to rectify this.
