Meditations on Tuning

Professor John Mowitt teases out various inflections of the notion of attunement, its limitations and new possibilities.

Attunement provides a resonant concept for examining how consciousness and world meet. This seminar, part of the 2021–22 Sadler Seminar Series ‘Tunings of the World’, puts its philosophical treatment in dialogue with the trope of ‘world music’ and with practices of alternative tunings, opening to the suggestive value of world dissonance.

The project this seminar inaugurates is one whose constitutive inter-disciplinarity is designed to open this conversation to many. At the same time, it reminds us all that attuning to a discipline often involves listening to what it only struggles to give voice to.

Professor John Mowitt is Leadership Chair in Critical Humanities at the University of Leeds.
