Alexander Barrie

What made you want to study your course at the University?

I’ve always been into music so formed a big part of growing up. I studied Music, Business Studies & History at A-level. In addition to my studies I have been part of lots of school orchestras, the Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra and the National Children and Senior Boys Choir.
 
I was attracted to the course at Leeds because of the year in industry links with Warner Music Group. I’ve wanted to work in the music industry since a young age and saw this as a way in, and luckily, I applied and received an internship. 

Describe the aspects of the course that you have enjoyed the most. 

The best thing about my university experience was being part of Leeds University Union Big Band. It was the most fun, challenging and engaging group I had been part of. I also enjoyed being a member of Stage Musicals Society. This group of people are the most welcoming and weird bunch of people I have ever met and I absolutely loved it. From prancing around on stage to fun filled socials there is something for everyone. Everyone is friends across year groups and alumni, it’s going to be exceedingly hard to let go. 

Tell us about your year in industry.

My year in industry placement at Warner Music Group was the most useful aspect of my university career. It made me so much more independent, as I had to think for myself and making decisions. I was given a lot of responsibility because I worked hard, which meant the job was fulfilling. Coming back to University afterwards also made me work harder and meant that I was focused on my modules, especially my dissertation. 

What are you planning to do once you graduate?

I’ve just taken up a role at Warner again. They offered me a job throughout my final year carrying on my responsibilities relating to Conor Maynard. However, I have moved department now to Firepit Technology as Digital Manager, which focuses on technology and innovation for the company.
