Portrait of William purcell

William Purcell

I am a recent graduate on the BA Music (International) programme with a strong passion for contemporary composition, aesthetics, and the interplay between gender, sexuality and music (my dissertation focussed on popular music and homosexual identity in post-Soviet Russia).

I spent my third academic year studying at the University of Illinois, USA, which was a phenomenal experience! As well as branching out into a variety of new and exciting areas academically, including composing/improvising for dance, and queer studies, I also had the opportunity to travel around both the USA and Canada – an unforgettable adventure.

During my time at Leeds, I have been rather involved in several student societies. As part of Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS), I was elected into the role of Symphony Orchestra manager. The highlight of this role was organising an international orchestral tour to Barcelona for the ensemble! I am also involved with the Music Theatre society and have both performed both in the pit and on stage in the musicals ‘Company’ and ‘Assassins’ respectively.

Leeds is a wonderful city with so much energy and vitality; there is a thriving scene for just about any interest you could imagine. The School of Music is a lovely place as it is large enough to offer great diversity of students, staff and areas of study, but also intimate enough for you to have a deep and thriving relationship with staff and students alike.

NB Will has just been appointed as Concerts Administrator and PA to the Music Director at the Hallé Orchestra.
