Dr. Federico Subervi-Vélez

The School of Media & Communication welcomed me as Visiting Leverhulme Professor in February 2018 so that I could dedicate my focused attention to research about the mass media and journalism in Puerto Rico, my home country.  Although originally from that island-nation-colony of the United States, my academic career was forged first as a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then as a professor at four U.S. universities.  I’ve also lectured, conducted research and taught briefly at various universities in Latin America and elsewhere in Europe before retiring from teaching.  My permanent home residence is in Austin, Texas.

  • Conduct research, write, publish
  • Offer guest seminars in Leeds and various other UK universities

Research interests

Now and in the foreseeable future my research interest centers on the mass media, journalism, and political communication in Puerto Rico.  During my academic career in the United States my main area of research, teaching and publications revolved on U.S. Latinos and media, with focus on the dynamics of Latino-oriented media, Latino political communication, children and media, and emergency communication policies and practices. I also conducted occasional research and published on the media in Puerto Rico, and race and media issues in Brazil.
