Before working for the University of Leeds, I had been self-employed during the rise of 'commercial/industrial' video during the 1980s, and was one of in the very first cohort of the Northern School of Film and Television in 1991 (Film production - directing fiction). In 1995, I arrived at the Institute of Communications Studies (eventually renamed School of Media and Communication) and was soon involved in the momentous transition from analogue to digital video production. My teaching stems from a combination of my own personal experience in commercial video production and directing short drama and documentary film, and ongoing contact with full-time professionals in film production, including screen actors and former Institute of Communications Studies / School of Media and Communication students.

My research interests have included French auteur film director Bertrand Tavernier; Subtitling, dubbing and international cinema; acting performance and the camera; post-DSLR 'revolution' independent cinema.
Recent production: JOE STRUMMER SLEPT HERE (documentary) - intimate account of three days in May '85 when THE CLASH landed unannounced in Glagow on their 'busking tour', for what turned out to be the band's last few performances, ending at the Glasgow School of Art.
In development: SENSATIONAL (documentary) - a new film about the rise and fall of Alex Harvey and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, centred on the band's formation in 1972 and the ensuing period when they shone so brightly on the UK live circuit until 1976.
