Profile

Originally from Busan, South Korea, I joined the Language Centre in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at Leeds in September, 2017.

I was awarded my PhD from Newcastle University in 2018. My thesis titled Multimodal Language Learning Environment of The Korean Digital Kitchen (KDK) involves learning a foreign language in a technology-enhanced kitchen. The Digital Kitchen is a technology-based real-world environment where students can simultaneously learn a foreign language and culture by carrying out the real-world task of cooking.

As I was keen on learning how best to teach English language, I moved to Newcastle for an MA course and then started my career as a teacher in Seoul. I also worked as a professional interpreter and translator (English-Korean) for many private and public areas for more than seven years. Using my expertise in both languages, I was able to build up my career as a lecturer at Leeds.

Interestingly, my undergraduate study is different from the above. It's Economics. Although academic backgrounds don't match each other, I have been able to integrate my knowledge and understanding of three different areas to carve relatively uncharted territory.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching Korean language and culture
  • Leading in-sessional and pre-sessional courses for international students

Research interests

In general, my research interests include Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Conversation Analysis (CA), Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Task-Based Language Learning and Teaching (TBLT), classroom interaction and multimodality.

My past research explored how computer technology assists foreign language and culture learning in a real world learning environment. This research experienced constant development, which is Linguacuisine.
I see this new development as the starting point for my current research, aiming to expand the field of language and culture education, not only for English, but also for Oriental languages and culture.

I am planning to create The Asian or Global Kitchen, an extension of The European Digital Kitchen. This new project provides an innovative and inspiring language learning method for foreign language learning students across the world.
