Event 1: NRPSI and the regulation of professional interpreting

Stephen Bishop, the Executive Director of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), gave a presentation on the organisation. He explained NRPSI’s role and responsibilities, its registration requirements, and benefits of registering. By illustrating some of the data gathered in the 2015 Annual Review of Public Service Interpreting in the UK, Stephen showed our students which are the most popular languages and locations in public service interpreting (PSI). He also outlined the main dos and don’ts of the profession and stressed the importance of the NRPSI Code of Conduct.

Event 2: Technology for Interpreters

Maha El-Metwally, an Arabic-English conference interpreter and member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), gave a talk on technology for conference interpreters. Her talk covered three aspects: Sim-Consec for consecutive interpreting; paperless preparation for conferences with the aid of a tablet; and apps for interpreters. Through the talk the students are made aware about how the latest technology can be used to facilitate their professional careers as interpreters.

Event 3: Branding for Interpreters

Maria Cecilia Lipovsek, a Spanish-English conference interpreter based in London and trading under MCL Interpreting, gave an interactive seminar on branding for interpreters. To add to the practical nature of her talk, the session was delivered in Spanish and our MA Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies (MACITS) students provided simultaneous interpreting into English for their peers. Cecilia took our students on a journey of self-discovery to help them find their inner voice, define their qualities and be able to determine what makes them unique. Our students were walked through a series of activities as Cecilia shared her own branding experience and invited them not to lose track of what is essential in our industry – to be professional at all times and able to interpret well.
