(Full time) 2021 start
Chinese and Italian B BA
Overview
Learn Chinese and Italian from beginner level and explore diverse cultures and societies across the world in this exciting five-year course.
You’ll have the opportunity to study abroad for two years, spending a year in China and another in Italy, where you’ll build your language skills and gain first-hand experience of the cultures.
Studying Italian, you’ll become fluent in the language and develop an in-depth knowledge of one of Europe’s most vibrant countries, and a leading world economy. You’ll build your proficiency in Chinese while exploring the society, history and culture of one of the world’s major economic powers.
This degree allows you to learn both languages from beginner level, although if you already have some knowledge of Chinese we can normally accommodate you. Core and optional modules will give you a firm grounding in both languages while you study the topics that interest you, allowing you to explore the history and culture of Italy, China and the wider Asia Pacific region.
Specialist facilities
The world class Brotherton Library holds a wide variety of manuscript, archive and early printed material in its Special Collections – valuable assets for your independent research. Our additional library resources are also excellent, and the University Library offers a comprehensive training programme to help you make the most of them.
You’ll also have access to the Language Zone – the University language resource centre – with books, DVDs, magazines, audio/ video resources and language learning software. To practise your speaking skills, you can participate in language groups with other students or a language exchange with a native speaker.
Course content
In your first year, dedicated language classes will allow you to develop your skills in spoken and written Chinese and Italian. You’ll also study Chinese and Italian culture and society through core and optional modules. A joint honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each single honours course, but you’ll take fewer optional modules so you can fit in both subjects.
All this will prepare you for your time abroad, when you’ll study intensive language classes for a year at a university in China. In year three, you’ll return to Leeds to study advanced language and choose from a range of optional modules such as Dante’s comedy, Sino-Japanese relations, Italian cinema, or Chinese linguistics.
You’ll then spend a year in Italy, immersing yourself in Italian life and developing your skills. In your final year you’ll return to Leeds to refine your language skills, take specialist modules and develop your interests into an independent project, such as a piece of research, a translation or documentary.
