Italian B BA
Overview
Rich in cultural heritage, Italy is also a leading world economy. This degree allows you to learn Italian from scratch and acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history and culture of this vibrant country.
Core modules will enable you to build your language skills while introducing you to Italian history, culture and society. You’ll then be able to select from optional modules covering a variety of topics from Renaissance art and Dante to cinema, contemporary literature, linguistic varieties, material culture and Italian for business. You’ll even spend a year in Italy to experience Italian culture first-hand.
Our expert tutors cover a wide range of research interests which means we can offer a range of modules that give you opportunities to pursue your interests.
This course will introduce you to Italian at beginners’ level and is aimed at those who have had no previous or little contact with the language.
Specialist facilities
As well as our great library resources, you'll have access to our Language Centre which has digital language labs, on deman d resources, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
There’s also our Electronic Resource Information Centre, which offers specialised computing facilities for translation studies and Interpreter Training Suites.
Course content
You’ll develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Italian in your first two years, while selecting modules introducing you to different elements of Italian civilisation, from Medieval and Renaissance Italy to contemporary Italian literature, cinema, culture and history. Through these modules you’ll develop language skills and cultural awareness that you can really cultivate in your third year, which is spent working or studying in Italy.
When you return to Leeds for your final year, you’ll study advanced language modules to refine your skills, while exploring more topics that interest you. Modules might cover topics such as contemporary literature, the history of the Italian language, or fashion, design, and specialised uses of Italian for marketing and business purposes. Some of these modules might be taught entirely in Italian.
You will develop critical and analytical skills while conducting independent research – skills that you can showcase when you complete your final year project.
