(Full time) 2019 start
Italian B BA
Overview
Rich in cultural heritage, Italy is also a leading world economy. This degree allows you to learn Italian from scratch and acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history and culture of this vibrant country.
If you haven’t studied Italian before, core modules will enable you to build your language skills while introducing you to Italian history, culture and society. You’ll then be able to tailor your degree to suit you, selecting from optional modules covering a variety of topics from Renaissance art and Dante to cinema, contemporary literature, linguistic varieties, material culture and Italian for business. You’ll even spend a year in Italy to experience Italian culture first-hand.
Our expert tutors cover a wide range of research interests, all of which inform their teaching. As a result we can offer flexible degrees that give you scope to pursue your interests – and we have excellent facilities to help you make the most of your time at Leeds.
Specialist facilities
Digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) are all housed in our fully-equipped Language Centre. It also stocks an extensive lending library of foreign films and newspapers among other on-demand resources.
Course content
This programme will introduce you to Italian at beginners’ level and is designed for those who have had no previous or little contact with the language. If you already have some knowledge of the language, you may wish to apply for the advanced programme BA Italian A.
You’ll develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Italian in your first two years, while selecting modules introducing you to different elements of Italian civilisation, from Medieval and Renaissance Italy to contemporary Italian literature, cinema, culture and history. Through these modules you’ll develop language skills and cultural awareness that you can really cultivate in your third year, which is spent working or studying in Italy.
When you return to Leeds for your final year, you’ll study advanced language modules to refine your skills, while exploring more topics that interest you, such as contemporary literature, the history of the Italian language, Italian cinema or fashion, design, and specialised uses of Italian for marketing and business purposes.
This will help you to develop critical and analytical skills while conducting independent research – skills that you can showcase when you complete an undergraduate dissertation.
