Music and Philosophy BA

Our joint honours programmes with Music provide an excellent opportunity to combine your interests in music with another subject. You’ll be able to develop your understanding of music’s role in history and culture, as well as expressing your creativity through composition or showcasing your performance abilities. You’ll combine core and optional modules to develop a good understanding of musical principles and develop specialist knowledge and skills in the aspects of music that suit you.

What’s the difference between belief and knowledge? Why are we here? How do we know what we know – and can we ever know anything at all? Philosophy at Leeds explores fundamental questions about how we understand the world. Through core and optional modules you’ll learn how to construct arguments and study key topics such as ethics and logic, as well as specialist knowledge in topics from ancient and moral philosophy to the ethics of life and death, philosophy of language or aesthetics.

A Joint Honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each Single Honours course, but you’ll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects. You’ll also undertake a major research project in either subject in your final year.

Music 

You’ll choose from core modules in your first year in music in culture, theory, history, practice, science and society. From there you’ll develop your knowledge and skills in areas such as solo or ensemble performance, music technology or psychology, aesthetics, notation, analysis or composition. In addition, in your final year, you’ll demonstrate your skills and knowledge through your research project. The combination of Joint Honours subjects you study may affect the modules that are open to you.

Philosophy 

Core modules in your first year will introduce you to topics such as ethics and logic and teach you to construct arguments. This will lay the foundation for the next two years, where you’ll continue to take a broad approach to philosophy by choosing modules from areas such as logic and language, philosophy of science, mind and knowledge or history of philosophy. By your final year you will also have highly developed research and analytical skills.

Learning and teaching

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment

We also use different types of assessment. Usually we use a mixture of exams and essays, but you may also be assessed on oral presentations or group work in some modules. Support will be on hand throughout your time at Leeds – for example, you’ll be able to attend extra classes on exam technique, structuring an essay and public speaking if you need them.

Entry requirements

A-level: ABB including B in Music.

Other course specific tests:

Normally students will have taken Music, but if you have not (especially if it isn’t taught at your school or college), you should have at least one essay-based subject, as well as a minimum ABRSM Grade 5 music theory and Grade 8 practical qualifications.

If you have taken Music, practical grades are not a requirement for this programme. However, if you want to study performance, you’ll need a minimum of ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall or Rockschool Grade 8 merit/grade 7 distinction (or demonstrate that you are of equivalent standard by the time you arrive in Leeds).

Extended Project Qualification

Where an applicant is taking the EPQ in a relevant subject this might be considered alongside other Level 3 qualifications and may attract an alternative offer in addition to the standard offer. If you are taking A Levels, this would be BBB at A Level including Music and grade A in the EPQ.

• Access to HE Diploma

  Pass diploma with 60 credits overall, including at least 45 credits at level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher. An interview and a piece of written work may also be required. This course has additional subject specific requirements. Please contact the Admissions Office for more information.

• BTEC

• International Baccalaureate

  34 points overall with 16 at Higher Level including 6 in Music at Higher Level

• Irish Leaving Certificate (higher Level)

• Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers

  BB in Advanced Highers including Music and AABBB in Highers, or B in Music in Advanced Highers and AAABB in Highers

• Welsh Baccalaureate

  The Welsh Baccalaureate is not typically included in the academic conditions of an offer made to you for this course. If you choose to undertake the Welsh Baccalaureate we would strongly encourage you to draw upon these experiences within your personal statement, as your qualification will then be taken into account both when your application is initially considered by the selection panel and again when reviewed by the admissions tutor at the time your A-level results are passed to us.

International students who do not meet the academic requirements for undergraduate study may be able to study the University of Leeds International Foundation Year. This gives you the opportunity to study on campus, be taught by University of Leeds academics and progress onto a wide range of Leeds undergraduate courses. IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.
