From Non-Cinema to the New Medusa

Speaker: Dr William Brown (Roehampton)

In this presentation, I shall discuss my ongoing research as it develops from considerations of what I have termed non-cinema (Brown 2018) to what David H. Fleming and I term chthulucinema (Fleming and Brown 2018; Brown and Fleming forthcoming).

The former looks at the relationship between aesthetics and politics in the context of zero- to low-budget digital filmmaking from across the globe, while the latter offers a renewed critique of contemporary digital culture as we transition from the Anthropocene (in which humans shape the planet more than the planet shapes humans) to what Donna J Haraway terms the Chthulucene (a planet devoid of humans; see Haraway 2016).
