ULITA – an Archive of International Textiles presents an evening talk to celebrate the opening of Resists: exploring resist-dyed textiles across cultures exhibition:

Researcher, designer and educator Dr Kate Wells discusses the unification of hand, technology and innovation in the history of resist-patterned fabrics across the world.

Exploring historical and contemporary resist dye techniques, Wells will also illustrate the potential of new approaches and procedures to enable the survival and commercial production of resist patterned fabric.

Dr Kate Wells is an expert in the fields of coloration & textile print design and technology. Author of the international book Fabric Dyeing & Printing she has actively promoted the dissemination of research and new developments within the field of textiles, coloration and education. As a result in 2010 was awarded the Society of Dyers and Colourists prestigious Silver Medal for prolonged valuable contributions to education in the area of coloration. An active researcher specialising in shibori processes, Kate believes in ‘Slow Textiles’ and ‘Digital Craft’ researching into sustainable and ethical production methods combined with natural dyes and organic, sustainable and recycled sourcing.

With over thirty years experience working at some of the most prestigious Design Universities in the United Kingdom, her extensive knowledge of textile design and associated technology has led to employment as a designer and technical consultant for many International Fashion & Textile Designers.
