Academic Filmmaking: Modalities, Experiment and Decolonisation

A showcase of academic filmmaking from the Centre for World Cinemas and Digital Cultures, with special guests from Aarhus, Birkbeck, SOAS and Universidad del Rosario.

Practice research (or practice-led research) has become a lively area of Film Studies, with exciting methodologies of video essay-making, participatory filmmaking and curation emerging over the last few years.

In this event we discuss new developments in academic filmmaking and showcase the films made with or by researchers at the University of Leeds, Aarhus University, Birkbeck (University of London) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London).

The film screenings and presentations are guided by several questions, including:

  • How can we use participatory arts methodologies to amplify others' (and "others'") voices?
  • What does it mean to decolonise filmmaking and film curation?
  • What place is there for experimental, or deformative, approaches to filmmaking in academic practice and film criticism?
  • What's next for academic filmmaking?
